Do You Know What Plastics Can Be Used for Food Contact Applications?

Take a quick look around your home and office and notice just how many products have different forms of plastic in them.

Each of these products is made from plastic products but each is different and unique, something we rarely consider when we think about plastic products.

While all plastic does come from petroleum or natural gas, the processes involved vary and affect the purity level of the finished product. Any plastic that comes into contact with something humans will consume including beverages and food is held to a much higher standard than other forms of plastic.

If you are looking to create plastic food packaging, it is essential that you understand which plastics are food-safe.

Here are the most common plastic resins approved for food contact:

  • Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)

PET resin is widely used in plastics that have food contact applications. The vast majority of single serving drinking bottles are made from PET. Specially-treated PET containers are microwaveable and used in take-out containers and single-serving food trays.

  • Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is a widely used plastic. You likely have polypropylene plastic in your fridge and cupboards right now: it is regularly used in reusable food storage containers. Its high melting point makes it suitable for microwaveable food containers. It is nonvolatile and does not react to liquids, acids, or bases, so PP food container is perfect to store a wide variety of foods.

  • High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

Many food grade plastic containers fall into the high density polyethylene — or HDPE — category. It has excellent chemical resistant properties making it suitable for a wide range of foods and other products.

  • Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

LDPE plastics are similar to HDPE plastics but are known for being less rigid. They are popular in squeeze bottles. Like PET and HDPE plastics, LDPE can hold your food products without leaching any harmful materials or allowing microorganisms to permeate.

  • Polycarbonate (PC)

Polycarbonate is commonly used in water-cooler bottles, baby bottles, and reusable water containers.
